Despite the industry’s excellent safety record, incidents still do occur. Most of these are entirely avoidable and are the result of a lack of awareness as to how to safely approach trains and crossings. That’s why Operation Lifesaver, a public-rail safety awareness program sponsored by the RAC, Transport Canada and other partners, was created. The program is designed to:
- Educate drivers and pedestrians on safe practices when approaching a train or highway/railway crossing.
- Inform the public of the dangers associated with trespassing on railway property.
- Reduce the number of railway fatalities and injuries that occur each year.
Operation Lifesaver produces and distributes educational materials, provides elementary and driver education curriculum, delivers civic presentations and promotes media coverage about public-rail safety across Canada.
