When you think of railways, you probably don’t think “Green” – but think again! Canadian railways are environmentally friendly – in fact, they have a significant environmental advantage over many other modes of surface transportation.
- Fact: By volume, rail currently carries approximately 64 percent of Canada’s goods moved by land, but only contributes three percent of transport’s greenhouse gas emissions!
- Fact: Rail provides an environmentally responsible alternative to the rapidly increasing problems of pollution, highway congestion, land use and massive highway infrastructure costs.
- Fact: Modern locomotives can move a tonne of freight 169 kilometres on a litre of fuel!
When it comes to being environmentally responsible, rail is definitely on the right track!
